Above gently rolling fields rises a hill bearing the remains of a fortification, framed by trees and drifting clouds. In the foreground, tall grass dissolves into fine, almost calligraphic strokes, while the distance blurs into soft light. The composition follows the classical division of foreground, middle ground and horizon – a quiet, pastoral landscape reflecting Cottet's familiarity with rural France.
